Horton Plains National Park - Horton Plains National Park is a protected area in Sri Lanka’s central highlands, featuring montane grassland and cloud forest. This plateau, at an altitude of 2,100–2,300 meters (6,900–7,500 ft), is rich in biodiversity, with many species endemic to the region. Designated a national park in 1988, it is a popular tourist destination located 8 kilometers (5.0 mi) from Ohiya, 6 kilometers (3.7 mi) from the renowned Ohiya Gap/Dondra Watch, and 32 kilometers (20 mi) from Nuwara Eliya.
The Horton Plains are the source of three major Sri Lankan rivers: the Mahaweli, Kelani, and Walawe. Known in Sinhala as Maha Eliya Plains (මහ එළිය තැන්න), stone tools from the Balangoda culture have been discovered here. The plains’ vegetation consists of grasslands interspersed with montane forest, including many endemic woody plants. Large herds of Sri Lankan sambar deer are typical, and the park is an Important Bird Area with many species endemic to Sri Lanka and restricted to the Horton Plains. Forest dieback poses a significant threat to the park, with some studies suggesting it is a natural phenomenon.
