The Journey to the Sky

As a former professor of European history, I have always been drawn to places where the past whispers through the stones and the air is thick with stories of old. The Meteora Monasteries in Greece, a UNESCO World Heritage site, had long been on my list of must-visit locations. The allure of these ancient sanctuaries, perched atop towering rock formations, was irresistible. My wife and I embarked on this journey with great anticipation, eager to explore the mystical heights of Meteora.

Our day began in Athens, where we were greeted by George, our guide and driver for the day. With over two decades of experience, George was not only knowledgeable but also a delightful companion. His stories of the region’s history and culture enriched our journey, making the drive through the Greek countryside a fascinating prelude to the wonders that awaited us. The comfort of the Mercedes van allowed us to relax and enjoy the scenic views, a welcome escape from the bustling city life of Athens.

It was, without a doubt, one of the best meals we had during our time in Greece.

As we made our way back to Athens, we stopped at the historic site of Thermopylae. Standing on the battlefield where 300 Spartans once faced the Persian army was a poignant moment, a tangible connection to the epic tales of heroism that have shaped our understanding of history.

Our excursion to Meteora was more than just a day trip; it was a journey through time, a chance to walk in the footsteps of those who came before us.
