Lumbini - This is a significant Buddhist pilgrimage site in Nepal’s Rupendahi district. It is traditionally considered the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, who became Buddha Gautama and established the Buddhist tradition. The Buddha lived approximately between 623 and 543 BCE. Lumbini is one of four key pilgrimage sites related to the Buddha’s life, alongside Kushinagar, Bodh Gaya, and Sarnath. Lumbini is where the Buddha lived until age 29 and features several temples, including the Mayadevi Temple, with more under construction. The Puskarini or Holy Pond is also here, where the Buddha’s mother took a ritual dip before his birth, and where he had his first bath. Nearby are the remains of the Kapilvastu palace. Other nearby sites are traditionally believed to be where earlier Buddhas were born, attained enlightenment, and passed away.
