Flight to Lukla - Trek to Phakding [2,656m]
Phakding - A scenic 30-minute flight from Kathmandu takes travelers to Lukla, a cliffside airport in Khumbu, where the Everest Region trek begins. After meeting the crew, the journey continues up the Dudh Koshi Valley on a well-marked trail, with an overnight stay in Phakding. Overnight at lodge.
Trek to Namche [3,450m]
Namche Bazaar - From Phakding, the trek involves crossing the river multiple times on high suspension bridges. Beyond Monjo lies the entrance to Sagarmatha National Park, established to protect the delicate mountain environment. A steep hike leads to Namche, where clear weather offers the first glimpse of Mt Everest. Namche is a bustling trading village in Khumbu, hosting a lively Saturday market where locals, lowland traders, and Tibetan yak caravans gather. Overnight at lodge.
Free day in Namche
Namche Bazaar - Nestled between two ridges amidst Khumbu’s towering peaks, Namche is a unique mountain outpost with a vibrant atmosphere catering to travelers’ needs. With numerous lodges, tea shops, and souvenir stores, it retains the charm of a typical Himalayan town. It’s an ideal place to rest and acclimatize before heading towards Thame.
Trek to Thame (3739m)
Khumjung - From Namche, the route turns west, following a nearly level trail up the Bhote Koshi Valley, once a major trade route to Tibet. Along the way, prayer flags and mani stones reflect the area’s Tibetan Buddhist culture. After descending to the Bhote Koshi, the trail climbs steeply to Thame, offering views of Teng Kangpoche and Kwangde peaks. To the north is the Nangpa La, a pass leading to Tibet. Thame Gompa, located above the village, hosts the spring Mani Rimdu festival.
Trek to Khumjung (3786m) via Hillary Hospital in Kunde
Khumjung - Retracing the route down the Bhote Kosi Valley towards Namche, the trail branches off to a quieter path to Khumjung, a picturesque village with its own gompa. En route, travelers visit Khunde hospital, established by Sir Edmund Hillary. The campsite offers excellent views of Thamserku, Kantega, and Ama Dablam.
Trek to Dole (4040m) via Mong La
Khumjung - Shortly after leaving Khumjung, the trail ascends to a large Chorten on a ridge descending from Khumbila, a 5734m peak believed to be the home of Khumbu’s patron God. The trail descends towards the Dudh Koshi river, with a lunch stop near the bridge to Phortse village. The path then climbs steeply to Dole through rhododendron and birch forests adorned with mosses and lichens.
Trek to Machermo (4410m)
Machhermo - From Dole, the trail climbs steadily along the valley side. As altitude increases, rhododendron forests give way to scrub juniper. The path passes through summer settlements [yersa], used for grazing yaks in summer. Ahead are stunning views of Cho Oyu, while the valley below offers views of Kantega and Thamserku. This short trek reaches Machermo in time for lunch.
Trek to Gokyo (4750m)
Excursion to Gokyo Ri (5340m)
Gokyo Ri - Gokyo Ri rises above the village on the lake’s northern edge. Departing camp at first light, a steep path leads up the hillside. As the climb progresses, the summits of Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu come into view. The summit of Gokyo Ri offers one of the finest views in the Everest region, some say surpassing that of Kala Patthar. After lunch, it’s a short walk to Na village, at the foot of the Ngozumpa Glacier.
Trek to Thagnak (4700m)/alternative Phortse
Trek to Dzongla (5330m) via Cho La
Trek to Lobuche (4910m)
Lobuche - After passing Duglha’s teahouses, the trail ascends onto the Khumbu glacier’s terminal moraine, passing stone monuments honoring Sherpas who perished on Everest expeditions. The trail then descends, following the valley’s west side to Lobuche. The sunset on Nuptse from here is truly spectacular.
Trek to Kala Pattar (5545m)
Kala Patthar - An early start is essential to reach Gorak Shep. The trail offers stunning mountain views, especially where it rises to cross a tributary glacier. Lunch is at Gorak Shep. In the afternoon, the trek continues to Kala Patthar [5554m], one of the Everest region’s best viewpoints, following the Khumbu Glacier. Afterward, the trek returns to Gorakshep.
Trek to Everest Base Camp (5380m)
Everest Base Camp Trail - The morning excursion to Everest Base Camp takes several hours, navigating ice pinnacles and Khumbu Glacier crevasses. On the return, a higher route offers spectacular views of the Khumbu icefall and the South Col route. The trek then returns to Pheriche.
Trek to Tengboche (3867m)
Tyangboche - The trek descends towards Tengboche, crossing the Dudh Koshi river bridge, and continues to Kyanjuma, the junction of routes to Gokyo Valley, Khumjung village, and Namche Bazaar. The area offers stunning views of Ama Dablam, Thamserku, Tawache, and Lhotse, along with diverse wildlife like pheasants, griffons, musk deer, and wild goats in the rhododendron forest. Evening exploration reveals magnificent scenery.
Trek to Namche Bazar
Namche Bazaar - The trek descends through hillsides covered in rhododendron and juniper trees. After crossing the prayer-flag adorned Dudh Koshi River bridge, the trail follows the gorge, descending rapidly through pine forests. Colorful pheasants and mountain goats may be spotted. The path reaches Sansa, offering views of Ama Dablam, Thamserku, and Nuptse mountains, before winding through a forest to Namche Bazaar.
Trek to Lukla (2800m)
Lukla - The final day’s trek follows the Dudh Koshi back to Lukla. This last evening in the mountains is perfect for a farewell party with Sherpa guides and porters, enjoying chang (local beer), Sherpa dancing, and reflecting on a memorable trekking experience.
Fly to Kathmandu
Kathmandu - An early start leads to the airstrip for a flight back to Kathmandu. Upon arrival, the rest of the day is free for personal activities.
Sightseeing in Kathmandu (Pashupatinath, Bouddhanath and Patan)
Kathmandu - As Nepal’s historical and cultural heart, Kathmandu has been a popular tourist destination since Nepal opened to visitors. The city blends Hinduism, Tibetan Buddhism, and Western influences. A guided tour includes Boudhnath, Nepal’s largest Buddhist stupa, and Pashupatinath, a major Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. The tour also visits Patan, or Lalitpur (City of Artisans), 5km from Kathmandu, exploring Patan Durbar Square and the architectural marvels of the Malla era. The Everest Base Camp and Gokyo Ri Trek is a remarkable journey that takes us through the lofty valleys of Khumbu. We begin by flying from Kathmandu to Lukla and then journey up the Dudh Koshi valley until we reach the Sherpa heartland of Namche. From there, we take the tranquil path to the Thame village situated in the Bhote Koshi valley. As we descend back to Khumjung, we come across stunning views of Kantega, Thamserku and the Nuptse-Lhotse structure with the imposing Everest above. In Khumjung, we sit in the shadow of Khumbila Peak, the dwelling place of the protector deity of the Khumbu region, before advancing up the Dudh Koshi valley to the azure lakes of Gokyo. From Gokyo, we make our way up to Gokyo Ri to witness a breath-taking 360-degree view of the snow-draped mountains in the Everest region.
From Gokyo, our next stops are Thagnak and then Cho La pass, which provides one of the most challenging days of the trek involving a steep traverse across a glacier and vertical icy rock surfaces. After reaching Dzongla, we take the lower path along the valley to meet the main trail leading to Everest Base Camp.
