Gokyo Valley Trek serves as an excellent substitute for the Everest Base Camp Trek, heading up the valley located west of Everest to the Gokyo community and five holy lakes nestled against the Ngozumpa Glacier. The pathway meanders along with the Dudhkoshi River until you reach its origin – a beautiful sequencing of sparkling green lakes. Gokyo, a Sherpa settlement, sits right next to the biggest of these lakes. From Gokyo, an ascent to Gokyo Ri (5360m) offers a breathtaking panorama of Everest, Lhotse, Cho Oyu, Makalu, Cholatse, and Taboche.
Much like Everest Base Camp Trek has Kala Patthar at a height of 5545m, Gokyo Valley Trek boasts Gokyo Ri at 5360m above the northern banks of Dudh Pokhari. This spot is a magnificent observatory that provides a view of Everest usually exclusive to aerial balloonists or alpinists.
