The legend of Manakamana Temple traces back to the 17th century during the reign of Gorkha King Ram Shah. It is believed that his queen had divine powers, known only to her devotee, Lakhan Thapa. Following the customs of that era, the queen performed SATI, a ritual immolation, on her husband’s funeral pyre.
