Locals refer to Patan as “Lalitpur,” meaning City of Beauty, which is also its original Sanskrit name, while its Newari name is Yala. Patan is a stunning city celebrated for its remarkable handicrafts and arts, earning it the title of the City of Arts! Located in the Lalitpur district, Patan is just about 5 km from Kathmandu, the capital city. Historically, Patan was an independent kingdom within the Kathmandu Valley. Known for its ancient Durbar Square, bustling streets, the Patan Kumari, and its stone and metal works, handicrafts, and temples, Patan is a must-visit destination. As a convergence of Hinduism and Buddhism, the city is rich with religious art, temples, and monasteries. UNESCO has recognized Patan as a World Heritage Site due to its exceptional architecture.
Bungamati and Khokana are quaint, traditional Newari villages located approximately 10 km from Kathmandu in the Lalitpur district. These villages offer a glimpse into Newari traditions, people, and their way of life. Despite the rise of modernization, Bungamati and Khokana maintain their traditional charm. The residents lead simple lives, residing in modest homes and primarily engaging in agriculture.
Bungamati is famous for the Rato Machhendranath temple, home to the revered deity Rato Machhendranath, believed to have been born here. The deity resides in Bungamati for six months and in Patan for the other six months, with the transition marked by a grand celebration. During the festival, the deity is transported in a handmade chariot pulled by local volunteers. Bungamati is also known for its intricate stone and wood carvings, a craft practiced by both men and women and passed down through generations.
In Khokana, the Karyabinayak temple, dedicated to the Hindu god Ganesha, is a significant attraction. It is considered a sacred site where people come to worship and seek blessings before important events. Khokana is also a popular picnic destination due to its scenic picnic spot nearby. Additionally, Khokana is renowned for its high-quality, pure mustard oil. Like Bungamati, Khokana is famous for its detailed stone and wood carvings, with numerous craft workshops and showrooms throughout the village.
