- Kathmandu Durbar Square - Kathmandu Durbar Square is steeped in mystery, with its well-preserved art, architecture, history, and culture. The historic palace is named after the Hindu monkey God, Hanuman. The coronation ceremonies of Nepalese Kings were traditionally held in the palace courtyard. At the front, visitors can see the statue of King Pratap Mall on a stone pillar, alongside the medieval Jagannath temple. The site also features the large stone statue of Kal Bhairav, the God of destruction, the Big Bell and Big Drum, and the figures of Hindu Lord Shiva and his consort Parvati peering from a window. Visitors can explore the residence of the living Goddess Kumari, a virgin girl chosen from a Buddhist family to serve as a deity. The building is adorned with intricately carved wooden balconies and window screens. Nearby, the Kasthamandap temple, believed to be constructed from a single tree trunk, is the origin of Kathmandu’s name.
- Swayambhunath Temple - Swayambhunath, also known as the Monkey Temple, is a 2500-year-old stupa located on a hillock approximately 77 meters above ground level, offering a stunning view of the Kathmandu valley. The dome, with eyes painted on all four sides, represents the all-seeing eyes of Buddha. Swayambhunath is a significant Buddhist shrine. Within the complex are two Buddhist monasteries and the Haratima temple, where both Buddhists and Hindus worship. The temple of Manjushree and Anandakuti Bihar are a short walk from the main site.
- Boudhanath Stupa - Located 6 km east of Kathmandu, the Boudhanath Stupa is believed to have been built in the 5th century AD. It is one of the largest Buddhist Stupas globally, surrounded by Buddhist lamas and monasteries. Boudhanath is a sacred site for Tibetan Buddhists, who visit in large numbers during winter to pay their respects.
- Pashupatinath Temple - Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Pashupatinath Temple is situated five kilometers east of Kathmandu on the banks of the Bagmati River. The temple, with its two golden roofs and four silver doors, is a revered pilgrimage site attracting tens of thousands of Hindu pilgrims each spring. Visitors can also witness Hindu cremation rituals along the riverbanks.
- Patan Durbar Square - Patan Durbar Square, the former residence of the Patan Royal Family, is the most photographed of Kathmandu’s three Durbar Squares, showcasing stunning Newari architecture. Key attractions include the Krishna Temple with its 21 golden pinnacles, the Rudra Varna Mahavihar Buddhist Monastery housing local treasures, and the central courtyard of Mul Chowk.
