A Day Surrounded by Lush Tea Plantations
Royal Botanical Gardens - As Sri Lanka’s largest garden, the elegant and spacious 147-acre Peradeniya Gardens require ample time to explore the impressive Avenue of Royal Palms. The gardens boast around 4,000 different plant species. The 10,000 or so trees, many of which are mature, lofty tropical timber trees, are the stars of the collection. Highlights include the Giant Bamboo of Burma, capable of growing 40 meters tall (130 feet) with a 25-centimeter stem diameter, and growing at a rapid pace of 30 centimeters a day. The century-old Giant Javan Fig Tree is sensational, with its tentacle-like roots spreading across an enormous area of about 1,800 square meters, beneath the tree’s vast “Umbrella” canopy.
Ambuluwawa Tower - The history of the Ambuluwawa Temple dates back to the 13th century during the reign of King Buwanekabahu IV. It is said that the Ambuluwawa Peak was the center of the Gampola Kingdom during his reign, although it lacks historical or archaeological significance.

At an altitude of 2,100 meters above sea level, Horton Plains covers over 3,169 hectares of the island’s highest tableland. Due to its large number of endemic flora and fauna species, Horton Plains was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site on July 30, 2010. The escarpment with a depth of 900 meters, known as World’s End, and Baker’s Falls are the highlights of Horton Plains.

Day Out with Leopards and Sloth Bears in Yala National Park
Yala National Park - Yala National Park is renowned for its high density of leopards, possibly the highest in the world. Visitors can also see elephants—grumpy lone males during the dry months and large herds in the wet season. Sloth bears are another major attraction. Other mammals include wild boars, several deer species, and wild buffalo. The park is home to a variety of reptilian species and numerous crocodiles. As is common in Sri Lanka, there is a rich diversity of stunning birdlife, including migratory species such as flamingos. It is also one of the few places in the world where the critically endangered black-necked stork can still be seen. The park’s uniqueness lies in its diverse habitats: dense jungles suddenly give way to lagoons and open plains, and the park boasts a beautiful seafront. Huge, stark boulders dominate the horizon, and the elegant, languorous leopard can often be seen basking atop the sun-baked rocks.
Coconut Tree Hill - Visit this charming hidden hill for a spectacular view.
Ramparts of Galle Dutch Fortress
Galle Dutch Fort - Galle’s strategic location along major sea routes made it one of the island’s most significant ports, attracting merchants and vessels from around the world. By 1502, Galle fell to Portuguese invaders led by Lourenço de Almeida. During their occupation, they built a fort to maintain control over Galle. Around 1640, the Portuguese surrendered to the Dutch East India Company, who heavily fortified the Galle Fort. In 1796, the British invaded Galle and took control of the fort, preserving its structure. It remained their administrative capital until Sri Lanka gained independence in 1948.
Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project - One of Sri Lanka’s most important breeding spots for endangered sea turtles. The sandy beaches serve as a sanctuary for several types of marine turtles, including loggerheads and leatherback turtles. The small turtle hatchery, opened in 1994, promotes responsible tourism and conservation. The hatchery buys turtle eggs from fishermen to discourage poaching and selling eggs. Visitors will learn about the importance of protecting turtle life through the hatchery’s facilities, which care for newborn turtles until they are ready to be released back into the ocean—an experience visitors may have the opportunity to participate in firsthand.
