The Old Dutch Hospital, with its tropical colonial-era architecture, is one such structure. Built in the late 17th century by the Dutch, it features boxy pillars, red clay roof tiles, and large central courtyards, reflecting the tropical needs and local building style of Ceylon at the time. While the building may appear somewhat plain overall, it is essential to appreciate its historical echoes during a visit.

Gangaramaya Temple is one of Colombo’s most significant temples, blending modern architecture with cultural essence. Situated on Beira Lake, it was completed in the late 19th century. The temple’s architecture showcases a diverse mix of Sri Lankan, Thai, Indian, and Chinese influences.

Old Parliament Building - Old Parliament
The Neo-Baroque-style building was constructed during the British colonial period to house the Legislative Council of Ceylon, an idea proposed by Sir Henry McCallum. It was later included in a proposal by a committee to build a new structure for the Secretariat, Council Chamber, and Government offices on reclaimed land at the northern end of Galle Face, approved by the Government in 1920. Austin Woodeson, the chief architect of the Public Works Department of Ceylon, was responsible for the design; his initial estimate of 400,000 rupees was later revised to 450,000 by the Public Works Advisory Board. The building was inaugurated on 29 January 1930 by Governor Sir Herbert Stanley; a year later, it was occupied by the State Council of Ceylon until 1947, when the House of Representatives was established with the advent of self-rule.
