Sigiriya is an ancient rock fortress and palace ruin surrounded by the remnants of an extensive network of gardens, reservoirs, and other structures. Built by King Kassapa during the 5th Century AD, Sigiriya is a popular tourist destination. It features prehistoric frescoes reminiscent of the Ajanta Caves in India. The Sigiriya rock, believed to be a hardened lump of granite from a long-eroded volcano, rises 370 m (1,214 ft) above sea level and stands prominently above the surrounding plain, visible for miles. The site includes the ruins of an upper palace on the rock’s summit, a mid-level terrace with the Lion Gate and mirror wall frescoes, a lower palace on the rock’s slopes, and walls and gardens extending hundreds of meters from the rock’s base.

Rawana Falls - Named after the legendary King Ravana, the falls are linked to the famous Indian epic, the Ramayana. Legend has it that Ravana, the king of Sri Lanka, kidnapped Princess Sita and hid her in the caves behind this waterfall, now known as the Ravana Ella Cave. The kidnapping was said to be revenge for Rama and his brother Laxmana slicing off the nose of Ravana’s sister. At the time, the cave was surrounded by dense forests. It is also believed that Rama’s queen bathed in a pool formed by the waterfall. Ravana is said to have played the Ravanahatha here.
