Keflavík International Airport - A complimentary shuttle service is available from either Keflavík International Airport or a hotel in Keflavík town to the CampEasy office, which is just a five-minute drive from the airport.
Reykholt - The journey includes a stop at Reykholt, a significant historical site from medieval times, known for its connection to the Icelandic Sagas.
Hraunfossar Lava Waterfall - The tour visits two stunning waterfalls: Hraunfossar and Barnafoss, located just a few meters apart. Hraunfossar features trickling streams flowing through vegetation across a large riverbed, while Barnafoss, or “children’s waterfall,” is a powerful surge of water emerging through a lava opening.
Barnafoss - Situated near Hraunfossar, Barnafoss is a forceful stream of water that bursts through a lava opening.
Deildartunguhver Thermal Spring - The tour stops at Deildartunguhver, Europe’s largest hot spring, located in Reykjadalur, or the “valley of smoke.” From a safe distance, visitors can observe massive bubbles forming in the 97°C water and feel the heat on their faces.
Krauma - The day concludes in the geothermal waters of Krauma Spa before heading to the campsite. Adjacent to Deildartunguhver, the facility features four pools fed by a constant, natural geothermal water flow. The site maintains water quality naturally, without chemicals.
Snæfellsnes Peninsula and Volcanic Cave
Glanni Waterfall - A small detour to visit the picturesque Glanni waterfall is recommended before heading west. The waterfall’s name, meaning “shining,” reflects the contrast between the “whiteness” of the tumbling water and the surrounding lava rocks.
Ytri Tunga Beach - This charming and secluded beach is one of Snæfellsnes’ hidden gems. Away from the tourist crowds, Ytri Tunga is known for being a spot where seals occasionally rest.
Budakirkja - A brief stop at Búdir church, one of Iceland’s three black churches, is a must for photographers. Nearby, Búdir hotel offers occasional sightings of seals in the sea.
Gatklettur - Gatklettur, or “hole in the cliff,” is an arch carved out by erosion. It’s an ideal spot for fantastic photos, with a round trip taking about 2 hours.
Vatnshellir Cave - At 2 PM, explore an 8000-year-old lava tube located 32 meters underground. This remarkable lava formation features robust flows creating an antechamber accessible by spiral stairs. Equipped with a helmet and headlamp, visitors descend deep beneath the surface.
Djúpalónssandur Beach - Djúpalónssandur is a black pebble beach where sailors were once selected. Men’s strength was tested by lifting large rocks (23 to 155 kg) and heavy driftwood logs, carrying or throwing them as far as possible. Today, the rocks and many logs remain on the shore, along with remnants of a rusty shipwreck, preserving the site’s historical connection.
Stykkishólmur and Eldborg Crater
Svodufoss - Begin the day by visiting a lovely waterfall. Connect with the tranquility of Icelandic nature by parking in the nearby lot and accessing the waterfall within minutes. On clear days, the Snæfellsnes glacier may be visible towering over the chute.
Kirkjufell Mountain - Kirkjufell is a renowned and frequently photographed mountain in Iceland. Formed 5 to 10 million years ago, its multi-layered tip gives it a unique and majestic appearance. Kirkjufell is paired with a nearby waterfall, Kirkjufellsfoss, which is not to be missed!
Thingvellir National Park - Þingvellir National Park is the first stop on the famous Golden Circle route. It’s a geological wonder where Öxará waterfall (Öxarárfoss) and Silfra Fissure were formed by the continental drift, splitting the earth’s crust in various locations. It’s also an important historical and political site, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Note that park entry is free, but a parking fee is required, which is not included in the tour price.
Golden Circle and Skógafoss Waterfall
Kerid Crater - Visit the Kerid volcanic crater, located just a 40-minute drive from Þingvellir National Park. The crater is approximately 3000 years old and features vivid colors in the summer. It’s a beautiful site in winter, especially when its inner lake catches the sunlight on frosty days. Note that there is a small admission fee to walk up to the crater, which is not included in the tour price.
Laugarvatn Fontana Geothermal Baths - At 11:45 AM, enjoy a Rye Bread tour where the dough is cooked in the ground by geothermal heat, and taste it! Then, soak in the warm waters of Fontana Bath, offering panoramic views of the lake.
Geysir - Next, visit Geysir, where the Strokkur geyser shoots a warm water column up to 15 meters in the air. Geysir is the second stop on the famous Golden Circle route.
Gullfoss Waterfall - Complete the Golden Circle with a visit to the mighty Gullfoss waterfall, which impressively drops into a narrow gorge from 32 meters high.
For those interested, a visit to Friðheimar Restaurant and Farm is recommended. Known for horse breeding, horse shows, and a tomato farm run entirely on geothermal energy using biological pest controls, Friðheimar offers a unique experience. The restaurant serves tomato specialties. Note that this is a recommendation only, and the admission fee is not included in the tour price. Booking in advance is required via email at fridheimar@fridheimar.is or by phone at (+354) 486 8894. If visiting, it takes 50 minutes, including driving time from Gullfoss Waterfall.
Seljalandsfoss - Seljalandsfoss is a 60-meter-high waterfall that you can walk behind. It’s a picturesque site, widely photographed and featured. Note that entrance to the waterfall area is free, but a parking fee is required, which is not included in the tour price.
Skógafoss - Next, visit the impressive Skógafoss waterfall, fed by melting waters from the Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers. This powerful chute offers a unique experience with deafening sounds, water spray, and rainbows as light reflects on the droplets. Prepare to be amazed!
Vík and Reykjavík
Dyrholaey - Dyrhólaey, or Doorhill Island, is the remains of what was once an island thousands of years ago. The promenade is a 120-meter rock formation with a gaping hole in the middle, where ships once sailed through. Today, Dyrhólaey is a popular site in Iceland and home to many bird species.
Reynisfjara Beach - Visit the renowned Reynisfjall cliff on Reynisfjara beach. The basalt columns of the cliff wall create a unique atmosphere. Visitors may enjoy sitting on some of them and gazing at the three basalt rock formations standing out of the Atlantic Sea. Legend has it that they are the remains of trolls caught by daylight, transforming them instantly.
Lava Show - At 1:30 PM, attend the Icelandic Lava Show to safely witness and experience real hot lava flowing through a simulated volcanic eruption.
Hallgrimskirkja - Hallgrimskirkja church is located near downtown Reykjavik and the famous Rainbow Street. For a 360° panoramic view of the city, a visit to the top of the church is recommended. Note that entrance to the church is free, but an admission fee is required to access the church’s tower, which is not included in the tour price.
Sky Lagoon - After visiting the ice museum and bar, head to the warm geothermal waters of the Sky Lagoon at 7:00 PM. Enjoy a two-hour stay in the spa with the Sky Pass entrance and its 7-rituals.
Departure
Krysuvik - Depending on your departure flight time, there may be time to visit the Reykjanes Peninsula before returning the campervan. Krýsuvík is a geothermal area on the peninsula where visitors can witness the heat, smell, and various shades of yellow, white, red, and green of the surrounding ground.
Bridge Between Continents - The Bridge Between Continents is a physical bridge where you can “stand” above ground between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates.
For those interested, a visit to the Viking World Museum is recommended, where you can be transported to the past, to the settlement time, and see a life-size Viking boat. The ship was built in 2000 and sailed to New York to commemorate Leifur Eiríksson’s journey to the new world a thousand years earlier. Note that this is a recommendation only, and the admission fee is not included in the tour price. If visiting, it takes 1 hour and 20 minutes, including driving time from the Bridge Between Continents.
