Kolsay Lakes
Kolsai Lake - Nestled in the Kul-say gorge, within the northern extensions of the Kungei-Alatau range, lie the stunning Kolsay lakes. These three mountain lakes, Kolsay-1, Kolsay-2, and Kolsay-3, are situated at altitudes of 1700 m, 2250 m, and 2700 m above sea level, respectively. The lakes boast impressive depths, with the first lake reaching 80 m and the second 50 m at their deepest points. They were formed by landslides at the gorge’s base, halting the flow of a swift mountain river at natural dams. The first Kolsay lake is 295 km from Almaty, stretching 1.5 km in length within a narrow gorge. Here, spruce trees tower higher than at other lakes, the water is warmer, and fishing enthusiasts can indulge in their hobby. The journey to the middle lake, Kolsay-2, offers a scenic route through the gorge, showcasing a breathtaking water flow. Kolsay-1 features a tourist campsite, and a 3-hour hike leads to the second lake, a paradise for mushroom foragers, untouched by civilization. The third and coldest lake is located 6 km further up. All lakes are home to trout, and the surrounding areas are ideal for hiking and horseback riding tours.
Our travel agency invites you to explore the walking tourist routes around the Kolsay lakes, situated in the mountains of the eastern Kungei Alatau range, approximately 300 kilometers from Almaty. The nearest village is Saty, located 280 km from Almaty.
Kolsay Lakes are renowned for their dark blue waters, encircled by blooming alpine meadows, rocky landscapes, and vast coniferous forests of Tien Shan spruce. They cascade one after another in a magnificent mountain gorge, earning the nickname ‘blue necklace of the Northern Tien Shan.’ Once seen, their beauty is unforgettable!
DAY IN KAINDY
Lake Kaindy - Kaindy Lake, meaning “birch” in Kazakh, is hidden within a coniferous forest at an altitude of 2000 m above sea level, amidst the Kungei-Alatau mountains. The lake’s name likely originates from an artificial birch grove nearby. Spanning about 400 m in length and nearly 30 m deep, Lake Kaindy was formed by natural forces when water flooded the gorge, creating a natural gate in the lake’s center. The tops of coniferous trees, not fully submerged, rise above the water like the masts of a sunken fleet.
From these treetops, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the Kainda gorge, SATA, and the Chilik river valley. Surprisingly, despite its unique beauty, this lake remains relatively unknown, possibly due to the nearby Kolsay lakes attracting more tourist attention. However, Lake Kaindy is gaining popularity each year.
