In early May, a mother bear may bring her yearling cubs to the hide area. Despite being a year old, these cubs face significant threats from male bears, but they are aware of this danger and can evade it. Yearling cubs are larger than newborns, yet they remain noticeably smaller than their mother.

The ideal time to capture photographs of cubs is in August and September, as both newborn and yearling cubs frequently visit the hide area with their mothers during these months. Like all bears, cubs are omnivores, with meat comprising the majority of their diet, while berries make up about one-third. At this stage, yearling cubs are beginning to learn the fundamentals of independent living. Their behavior might appear uncertain, hesitant, and even amusing when compared to fully mature bears.
