St. Augustine’s Abbey - Established in 598, St Augustine’s Abbey served as a monastery for St Augustine and his monks upon their arrival in England to convert the Anglo-Saxons to Christianity. It also served as a burial site for the Anglo-Saxon kings of Kent. During the tour, you will have the opportunity to view the site and buildings from various vantage points, including the footprint of the three churches and the impressive medieval gates. Please note that entry to St Augustine’s Abbey is not included in the tour.

St. Martin’s Church, Canterbury, Kent - St Martin’s Church is the oldest church in continuous use in England, welcoming worshippers since before 597 AD. When Queen Bertha, a Christian, married King Ethelbert around 580 AD, he restored St Martin’s for her to pray in. It was later used by St Augustine and his monks in their mission to convert the Anglo-Saxons to Christianity.
The tour will lead you uphill to St Martin’s Church, involving a steep climb up a series of steps. Please be aware that the churchyard ground is uneven, so sturdy shoes are recommended.
Subject to church opening and service hours, your guide may be able to take you inside St Martin’s. Please note that the church requests a donation of £5 per person, payable upon entry.
- The Buttermarket Square - This site is home to historic pilgrim inns, the bull stake, a theatre, and a market hall, as well as the impressive Christ Church Gate entrance to the Cathedral.
- Canterbury Cathedral - Experience the grandeur of Canterbury Cathedral as your route takes you through the Cathedral Precincts, the Cathedral cloisters, and past the ruins of the old monastery. Admission to the Cathedral itself is not included.
