MALINDI/WATAMU – TSAVO EAST (120 kms – Approx. 3 hrs)
Tsavo National Park East - An early start is planned for the journey along the “explorers’ route”, the Malindi – Sala Gate Road.
Meal Plan: Lunch, Dinner.
In just a few hours, the southern gate of Tsavo East will be reached, and after a brief stop for refreshments, the adventure of tracking wildlife in this historic park begins.
The journey will continue across the rugged plains in a 4 x 4, searching Tsavo’s vast landscapes for lions, cheetahs, elephants, buffalo, and many more species under the park’s expansive skies.
Lunch and relaxation will follow, likely after some exciting sightings. As the afternoon cools, another game drive will commence to discover more wildlife.
Prepare to witness one of the park’s stunning sunsets over the savannah, far removed from the beach. The first safari night will be spent at a lodge or tented camp of choice.
What to see at Tsavo East National Park
TSAVO EAST – WEST (60 kms – Approx. 1 hr)
Tsavo National Park East - Rise with the animals as they venture onto the plains to greet the day. Enjoy the dawn light over the park’s vast expanse while exploring and tracking the big game.
A return to the accommodation for a well-deserved safari breakfast will follow.
Then, another relaxed game drive will be enjoyed, possibly visiting the park’s watering holes, where wildlife gathers to quench their thirst.
Having explored much of the park, it’s time to visit the neighboring reserve of Tsavo West, just an hour’s drive away.
The green hills and landscape of Tsavo West will welcome visitors upon entry. The scenery here features more foliage and land formations. Look for oases, baobab trees, and impressive volcanic lava beds.
All the “Big Five” are present, and tracking them will be the focus over the next two days.
Tsavo West - Malindi
Tsavo National Park West - Following the wildlife’s lead, a pre-breakfast game drive will be undertaken, searching for early morning hunters and grazers. Traveling over the dewy grass with the emerging golden light is one of the safari’s great joys.
Breakfast will be enjoyed before hopping back into the 4 x 4 to travel through the park to Mzima Springs, a beautiful oasis fed by millions of gallons of crystal-clear water. A guided walking safari by the shores will reveal hippos, crocodiles, fish, and even migratory birds.
An underwater hippo viewing chamber offers a unique perspective of these enormous creatures.
But soon, it will be time to return to the coast. The journey back to the coast on the Mariakani-Malindi road will be made in the Jeep.
