Drawn by the allure of Mount Kenya’s Chogoria Route, I embarked on a thrilling adventure through breathtaking landscapes and lush forests. Join me as I recount this unforgettable journey.
The Journey Begins: Chogoria Route Beckons
As a wildlife photographer with a penchant for adventure, the allure of Mount Kenya’s Chogoria Route was irresistible. The promise of traversing through the breathtaking landscapes of the Mount Kenya National Park, with its unique blend of glacial valleys and lush forests, was a call I couldn’t ignore. I embarked on this journey with a group of like-minded adventurers, eager to experience the magic of the Chogoria Route.
Our adventure began with a drive from Nairobi to Chogoria town, where we were greeted by the vibrant local culture and the warm hospitality of the people. After a hearty lunch, we set off in a 4x4 vehicle towards the Chogoria Banda, the starting point of our trek. The anticipation was palpable as we began our hike through the Hargenia forest, with the majestic Mugi Hill and the Giant Billiard Table looming in the distance. The trail was a feast for the senses, with the sound of the River Nithi and the sight of the cascading Nithi Falls adding to the enchantment of the journey.
As we reached Lake Ellis, our campsite for the night, the beauty of the surroundings took my breath away. The serene lake, nestled amidst the rugged landscape, was a perfect spot to unwind and reflect on the day’s adventures. As the sun set, we gathered around a bonfire, sharing stories and laughter, and forging bonds that would last a lifetime.
Ascending to New Heights: Lake Michaelson and Beyond
The next morning, we set off towards Lake Michaelson, our spirits high and our hearts full of excitement. The trail led us through glades of montane forest and across moorland, offering breathtaking views of the Gorges Valley and the Northern Moorlands. As a photographer, I was in my element, capturing the stunning vistas and the vibrant flora and fauna that called this place home.
Reaching Lake Michaelson was a moment of triumph. Perched at 4200 meters, the lake is a hidden gem, surrounded by towering cliffs and offering a sense of tranquility that is hard to find elsewhere. We spent the night at the Lake Michaelson camp, under a canopy of stars, feeling a deep connection to the natural world around us.
The following day, we embarked on the final leg of our ascent, making our way to the Austrian Hut. The trail took us through the Temple cliff drop, offering a stunning view of Lake Michaelson below. The sense of achievement was palpable as we reached the hut, knowing that the summit was within our grasp.
The Summit: A Moment of Triumph
The final push to Lenana Peak began in the early hours of the morning. The path was steep and challenging, but the promise of witnessing the sunrise from the summit spurred us on. As we climbed, the first light of dawn began to illuminate the landscape, painting the sky in hues of pink and orange.
Reaching the summit of Lenana Peak was a moment of pure joy. Standing at 4895 meters, with the world spread out below us, was a humbling experience. The view was nothing short of spectacular, a testament to the raw beauty of Mount Kenya.
Our descent via the Sirimon route was a journey through lush forests and vibrant landscapes, a fitting end to an unforgettable adventure. As we made our way back to Nairobi, I reflected on the journey and the incredible team that made it possible. The camaraderie, the laughter, and the shared experiences had transformed this trek into something truly special.
