Lake Nakuru National Park - Lake Nakuru is a shallow, alkaline lake located in the Great Rift Valley. Established in 1960 as a bird sanctuary, the park is a prominent destination for ornithologists and researchers, boasting 450 bird species and approximately 30 endangered white rhinos. A few black rhinos can also be spotted.
The park is home to the largest forest of yellow acacia and giant Euphorbia trees. Notably, the rare and endangered Rothschild giraffe was introduced to this park after being relocated from the Soy Plains of Eldoret in 1974.
The most remarkable attraction is the presence of over one and a half million greater and lesser flamingos, creating a stunning pink spectacle along the lake’s edges. The lake’s natural abundance of blue-green algae serves as the primary food source for the flamingos.
Visitors can also enjoy breathtaking views of the lake from Baboon Cliff, the park’s highest point. Other wildlife includes large herds of buffaloes, Defassa waterbuck, impalas, Grant’s and Thomson’s gazelles, lions, baboons, cheetahs, elands, leopards, spotted hyenas, black and white colobus monkeys, common zebras, genets, and more. Game viewing is relatively straightforward.
