Setting Sail on the Inside Passage

The allure of Alaska’s Inside Passage had always been a siren call to me, a marine biologist with a penchant for water adventures. The promise of navigating my own boat through the serene yet exhilarating waters of Ketchikan was an opportunity I couldn’t resist. As I arrived at the cruise terminal, the anticipation was palpable. Our friendly van driver, a local with a wealth of knowledge, whisked us away to Salmon Falls Lodge, the starting point of our adventure. The drive was a scenic 30-minute journey, offering glimpses of the lush Alaskan landscape.

Upon arrival, we were outfitted with rubber gumboots and waders, ensuring we stayed dry during our excursion. The day was perfect, with mirror-flat seas and a gentle breeze. The boats, RHIBs equipped with 40HP engines, were in pristine condition, and after a thorough briefing, we were ready to take the helm. The thrill of being the captain of my own vessel was invigorating, and as we set off, the beauty of the Inside Passage unfolded before us.

A Dance with Nature

Guided by the experienced Danyel, our small flotilla of three boats glided through the water, each moment a testament to the untouched beauty of Alaska. The calm waters of Clover Pass provided a perfect backdrop for our exploration. As we navigated the jagged coastline, the sight of bald eagles soaring above and seals lounging on the rocks was a reminder of the vibrant ecosystem thriving in these waters.

Danyel’s commentary was both informative and engaging, offering insights into the wildlife and the delicate balance of the marine environment. As a marine biologist, I found myself captivated by the intertidal creatures and the possibility of spotting bubble-net feeding humpback whales. After nearly two and a half hours on the water, we returned to Salmon Falls Lodge, where a feast awaited us. The spread of smoked salmon dip, warm crab and brie, and hummus was a delightful end to our adventure. Paired with a cold drink, it was a moment to savor, a chance to reflect on the day’s experiences and the beauty of the Inside Passage.
