The Presidential Trail offers a gentle incline walk beneath the faces in the rock rubble, providing excellent photo opportunities of the individual faces. For those who venture further, there is a challenging walk down to the Sculptor’s Studio (open only during summer) and then back up to the viewing terrace.
The Avenue of Flags showcases all 50 states and territories, along with their respective dates of admission to the Union. A new Youth Exploration area has recently opened. The large gift shop offers a variety of items.
The Carvers’ Café and an ice cream shop are available for refreshments. Before leaving, a stop is made for a photo of George Washington’s side profile.
- Crazy Horse Memorial - From Mt. Rushmore, it’s a 30-minute drive to Crazy Horse Memorial. Visitors spend 1½ hours here, or longer if dining at the Laughing Water Restaurant. This is a three-sided sculpture that will be the largest in the world upon completion.
A 20-minute video about the carving and the sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski and his family, who are working on it, is available. The North American Indian Museum features items from various Indian tribes, with 90% of the items donated.
The gift shop offers many Native-made items for sale. Ziolkowski’s workshop and the log home he built, filled with antiques, are open for tours. The Native American Cultural Center allows visitors to watch Natives crafting items for sale, with display items available to see and touch.
There is a brass Nature Gate and a large statue of Fighting Stallions.
- Custer State Park - After leaving Crazy Horse, the drive continues through the city of Custer, the oldest town in the Black Hills, and into Custer State Park to drive the 18-mile Wildlife Loop Road.
In the spring, the park is home to around 1,300 buffalo, including newborn calves. There are also antelope, deer, prairie dogs, begging burros, and stunning scenery.
A comfort stop is made at the State Game Lodge area at Coolidge Inn Store or Custer State Park Visitor Center, before heading back to Rapid City.
