The fortress is strategically perched on a solitary rocky hill at the end of the Vindhya Range, standing at an elevation of 1,203 feet (367 meters) and offering a commanding view of the Bundelkhand plains. It has been a significant site for several ruling dynasties of Bundelkhand, including the Chandela dynasty of Rajputs in the 10th century and the Solankies of Rewa. The fortress houses several ancient temples, some dating back to the Gupta dynasty of the 3rd-5th centuries CE.
In Sanskrit, Kalinjar means “The destroyer of time.” ‘Kal’ signifies time, and ‘jar’ means destruction. According to legend, after the mythological churning of the ocean (manthan), the Hindu God, Lord Shiva, consumed poison, turning his throat blue (hence the name Neel (blue) Kantha (throat)). He then came to Kalinjar and conquered ‘Kal,’ symbolizing victory over death. This is why the Shiva temple at Kalinjar is named Neelkanth. Since then, the hill has been revered as a sacred site, casting its shadow over the grasslands and the densely forested valley. The natural beauty of the surroundings makes it an ideal place for meditation and reflection, with a unique mystique that still envelops the hill.
The Fort stands as a testament to cultural and religious grandeur. The landscape of Kalinjar is highlighted by the renowned temple of the timeless Neelkantha, the tallest ‘Kala Bhairava’ image, numerous exquisite sculptures, and artistic friezes scattered throughout the site, dating from the Gupta period to the time of the Chandelas.
Your personal guide will be pleased to recommend a place for lunch, though options are limited. Enjoy the charming countryside of central India and make a few photo stops for panoramic shots if time allows during the drive. Return to your hotel lobby in Khajuraho with cherished memories.
