A breathtaking trip to Central Monglia! - I had a fantastic time on this 3-day tour from Ulaanbaatar to central Mongolia and back. My guide and driver, Ao, was excellent: friendly, polite, knowledgeable, and genuinely engaging to talk to. He played a huge role in making the experience so positive and memorable. On Day 1, I was picked up around 9am in Ulaanbaatar and we drove to Kharkhorin. Although it was a long journey, we made regular stops for snacks, drinks, and a relaxed lunch of local food. Despite the winter conditions, Ao always drove very safely, which was reassuring. In Kharkhorin, we visited the museum, where Ao shared insightful explanations and answered many questions about Mongolian history. That evening, we stayed in a ger at a campsite — as it was low season, we were the only guests, which made it feel like a private stay. On Day 2, we visited the stunning Erdene Zuu Monastery. Watching and listening to the monks’ prayers was a powerful experience; although photography and recording aren’t allowed, the monastery livestreams the prayers on Facebook. We then travelled to snow-covered sand dunes, which were absolutely breathtaking. Thanks to the low season, I had plenty of time to explore and climb the dunes completely on my own. Later, we stayed with a nomadic family in their ger. As a storm was forecast for the following day, we brought forward the camel riding. On horseback with the family’s father, we helped herd their camels back to camp before riding them at sunset. The day ended with making traditional Mongolian dumplings together before settling in for the night. The third day (when you normally would have done the camel riding), was us having breakfast at the family's camp before starting the drive back to Ulaanbaatar. We were able to miss the storm, so the drive was smooth. We got back in good time, but the traffic in Ulaanbaatar was pretty bad, so it still took some time to get to the hotel. I would recommend this tour and Ao to anyone visiting Mongolia! I loved every minute of it!
