From Waves to Wilderness: A Day in Killarney’s Natural Beauty

When the waves call for a break, I found myself drawn to the serene beauty of Killarney. The Lakes of Killarney and Gap of Dunloe offered a refreshing escape from the surf, with a day filled with stunning landscapes and unforgettable moments.

A Journey Through the Lakes

As a seasoned traveler and surfer, I’ve always been drawn to the ocean’s vastness and the thrill of riding waves. But every now and then, I find myself yearning for a different kind of adventure, one that takes me away from the salty breeze and into the heart of nature’s untouched beauty. That’s how I found myself in Killarney, ready to embark on the Lakes and Gap Adventure.

The day began with a bus ride from my campsite, a cozy spot recommended by my hosts, Fionnán & Brid at Flemings White Bridge. Our driver was a friendly chap who made sure we were all comfortable and excited for the day ahead. We arrived at Ross Castle, where we met our boatman, David, and his adorable sidekick, Bailey, a Maltese Yorkie cross who seemed to be the real captain of our ship.

The boat journey through the three Lakes of Killarney was nothing short of magical. David’s commentary was both informative and entertaining, painting a vivid picture of the area’s history and natural wonders. As we glided through narrow and shallow parts of the lake, the adventure took on a new dimension. At one point, we had to disembark and walk a short distance while David and Bailey navigated a tricky section alone. It was a reminder of the unpredictable nature of travel and the beauty of going with the flow.

The Heart of the Gap

After a delightful lunch at Lord Brandon’s Cottage, it was time to experience the Gap of Dunloe. This part of the journey was a highlight, as we were taken across the stunning landscape by Sean and Liam, our jarveys, with their trusty horses, Rosie and Silver. The scenery was breathtaking, with rugged mountains and lush valleys stretching as far as the eye could see.

I decided to walk part of the Gap alongside the jarvey, giving the horse a well-deserved break and allowing myself to soak in the surroundings at a leisurely pace. The banter with Sean and Liam was a treat, filled with stories and laughter that made the journey even more memorable. For those feeling energetic, walking the full 7.5 miles is an option, but you’d miss out on the camaraderie and tales shared along the way.

The Gap of Dunloe is a place where time seems to stand still, and every turn reveals a new vista more stunning than the last. It’s a reminder of the power and beauty of nature, a world away from the ocean waves I’m so accustomed to.

A Perfect Ending

Our adventure concluded at Kate Kearney’s Cottage, where we were greeted with warm hospitality and a chance to unwind after a day of exploration. The bus ride back to the campsite was filled with reflections on the day’s experiences and a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to witness such beauty.

This journey through the Lakes of Killarney and the Gap of Dunloe was a refreshing change from my usual surf-centric travels. It reminded me of the joy of discovering new landscapes and the stories they hold. If you ever find yourself in Killarney, don’t miss the chance to embark on this unforgettable adventure. It’s a day that will stay with you long after the journey ends, much like the perfect wave that lingers in a surfer’s memory.
