Đa Sỹ - Renowned for its age-old forging heritage, Da Sy was historically recognized for providing weaponry during Vietnam’s significant wars.
In this engaging workshop, participants will delve into the knife-making process, step by step: - Design: Start by sketching your blade on a meticulously chosen piece of durable metal, selected for its strength and quality.
- Forging: Cut out the blade and tang (the section that fits into the handle) using traditional tools such as hammers, cutters, and an anvil. Heat them in the blazing forge to prepare for shaping.
- Shaping: Collaborate with artisans, taking turns hammering the metal into the desired form. A hydraulic machine will assist in refining any rough edges for a smooth finish.
- Sharpening: Finally, sharpen the blade on a grindstone. This process includes several steps, one involving a distinctive tar-based wash—an ancient family secret handed down through generations!
Throughout the experience, a skilled artisan will guide participants, ensuring every detail of their work reflects their personal touch. Participants will take home not just a beautifully crafted knife but also a part of themselves in its creation—a piece to use in crafting delicious meals and creating lasting memories.

Very fun and educational for beginners - My experience was amazing! I booked this tour with my friend. The tour guide was Hai Ly (Mint) was very friendly and informative. I recommend this to all who want to experience fascinating lessons Vietnamese culture.

Knowledge, amazing, perfect - This was an amazing experience, the master blacksmith is amazing. Her fluid motion made making these blades look easy. I love the her workmanship. I would definitely come back for more creations.
Out host was amazing at explaining everything step by step. She gave us a great history lesson of the community. Also gave us a brief background of the blacksmith. Both of where amazing. For anyone wanting to learn how to create knives please come show love to these hard working woman

100% Must do - Went to the knife making class on my last day in Hanoi. We booked the private class with car the night before and I reached out to the provider to areange the pickup point. Communication was great and fast, even though it was quite late already. I recommed booking the private class - I really enjoyed that it was just the two of us, the blacksmith and the guide. Out guide Mint was so wonderful- not only did she explain all the steps of the process, she also shared a lot about Hanoi, the blacksmith and even the technical details of what was going on throughout the process- we enjoyed it so much and were able to ask questions to the master.
They assisted with picking out the design and even indulged us in our choice of unique shaped blades as well which was admittedly personalised and more complex.
They also have a lot of options to see and pick from design-wise on spot.
The class is very hands on- from shaping the handle to hammering and sharpening the blade- you get to be a part of each step.
They also pack it safely for you to get it home.
In the end your knife can slice through paper with no issues.
You also get a small certificate in the end.
Definitely will re-visit this when back in Hanoi with perhaps a more specific design in mind.
This was the best practical experience we did in Hanoi.

Best experience in Hanoi - Super unique and amazing hands on experience! You get to design and make a knife exactly to your own unique specifications, as well as carve the knife handle. The blacksmith master Đỗ Thị Tuyến is the only female master in this area famous for blacksmiths and the Vietnamese craft of knife making, with more than 40 years experience she is a national treasure. This will be one of the best things you can do in Vietnam!

Make your own souvenir ! - A wonderful trip! We learned how to make a knife from scratch and had the opportunity to choose and create our own unique item. Thank you for everything. Nick's family was very kind and made sure we lacked nothing. I recommend it to everyone; having a handmade knife in your home is more than just a good souvenir 🥰

Excellent time - We had such a fun time learning about the Vietnamese culture and the artisan herself along with a great guide who spoke great English and helped explain everything along the way. We were able to witness the artisan shaping the steel, make the blade and sharpen the steel and participate in the process too, which we really enjoyed. Despite us being picky about how we wanted the blade, she listened patiently and helped make it exactly as we wanted. We would definitely recommend it!

A special experience and a story - We absolutely loved our knife-making experience with Nick and Mint! From start to finish, we felt supported, encouraged, and completely involved in the process. Even with translation, everything flowed seamlessly — Nick and Mint made sure we understood each step and felt confident along the way.
Their professionalism, passion, and patience truly shone through, turning what could have been a challenging task into such a fun and memorable experience. We’re so proud of the beautiful knives we created — they’re not just keepsakes, but something we’ll use and treasure for years to come.

Unique Experience - A unique experience making knives for the morning. Our guide Khoi took us out to the village from our hotel and helped us work with the knife makers to create our masterpiece. A grat experience all round!
