Black Lava - Black lava, known as “lahar hitam,” from Mount Batur is solidified basaltic lava. Batur is an active volcano located in Kintamani, Bali. During eruptions, the lava emerges in dark gray to black hues due to its high iron and magnesium content and low silica levels.
The reason for its black appearance includes fast cooling: when lava contacts air or ground, it cools rapidly, trapping tiny crystals that give the rock a dark and porous look. Low silica content: Basaltic lava like Batur’s flows easily and doesn’t trap much gas, resulting in smooth or ropey black rock.
The black lava fields are widespread around Lake Batur and the Kintamani area. The most notable flows are from the 1963 and 1974 eruptions. Today, they resemble a black desert with moss and small plants gradually growing on top.
Balinese people perceive the black lava as both destructive and fertile. It devastates land during eruptions, but over thousands of years, the weathered lava transforms into extremely fertile soil. This is why Kintamani is renowned for its oranges and coffee.
