An unforgettable experience at Salaam Cave in Zanzibar – perfect for swimming-loving children! - Our visit to Salaam Cave in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar, was an absolute highlight of our trip. This natural cave offers the rare opportunity to swim with sea turtles in their protected environment – an experience that is especially suitable for children who are good at swimming and are not afraid of animals.
What makes Salaam Cave special?
✅ Natural environment
The cave is located in Kizimkazi Dimbani and impresses with its crystal clear waters where sea turtles live in a protected environment. The ambience is unique and feels like a secret lagoon.
✅ Swimming with sea turtles
Here you have the opportunity to swim directly with the turtles, observe them and even feed them. The animals are used to humans and move relaxed through the water – a great experience for all nature lovers!
✅ Education & conservation
Salaam Cave is not only a fascinating excursion destination, but also a sanctuary for sea turtles. The guides explain a lot about their way of life, dangers from pollution and how to help protect these impressive animals.
✅ Friendly care & good organization
The staff is very welcoming and makes sure all guests feel comfortable. The tour is well organized, and care is taken to ensure that the handling of the turtles remains respectful.
Notes for visitors:
Swimming skills required: Since the water in the cave is deep, visitors should be able to swim safely. For children it is especially important that they feel comfortable in open water.
Bring your own snorkeling equipment: To enjoy the experience to the full, it may be worth having your own mask and snorkel.
Respectful handling of animals: The turtles should not be harassed or held – they move towards the visitors on their own, and rather they are still to be turned away cautiously.
Conclusion:
Visiting Salaam Cave is a unique experience that perfectly combines adventure, education and conservation. Especially for families with swimming-loving children, it is a wonderful way to experience the fascinating world of sea turtles up close. An absolute must for anyone visiting Zanzibar!

They are sublime - Great experience.
Turtles are just sublime and nice. You can do the excursion 30 minutes or 1 hour. We chose the 30 minutes option and it was more than enough.
You can pay with credit card and dollars. We paid 25$ for 2 or 12€ per person approximately. Understand, the pass to go down to the cave, as well as a small bin with salad to feed the turtles.
If you are respectful think that the dress code is different from that of Europe. For the respect of the inhabitants, it is better to wear stockings that cover the legs down to below the knees for men and women + shoulders covered for us ladies.
We went there on our own (we were at Lalaland Lodge, which is about 5 km walk away).

This is a MUST do! - Magical experience! We followed the advice of a reviewer's recommendation to book early. We arrived at 08h00 and had the full hour and 30 minutes to ourselves before more people arrived. No photo can justify the serenity of this place. The premises itself is well kept, the staff really cares about nature and keeping it to the natural state.
I can highly recommend the Maalum Ritual after the cave slot at the Spa. Such a spoil and highlight to our trip!

Hidden natural experience - Actually we wanted to visit another cave, but our guide "Klausi" recommended this one to us. She wouldn't be so overflowing and very beautiful. He didn't promise too much. We were on site in the morning of a day tour and loved it. It is located in a private hotel complex, looks very inconspicuous from the outside and the approach is very bumpy. But you will be surprised with a beautiful little natural wonder. A bath provided cooling and we enjoyed the tranquility. Those who are nearby should treat themselves to a visit.
Since the bottom is sometimes very rocky, bathing shoes are appropriate.

Surprisingly super chill bath hole - Super delicious and cozy place where you can swim in fresh water, eat in a cozy cafe and relax in hangings. You borrow swimwear and swim mask and have 1.5 hours in the water. You have to book a time slot so there are not too many in the water. You can see less fish. Can only be recommended

What a wonderful spot for a refreshing break - This was an unexpected delight.
You have to book your time slot beforehand as the slot are limited due to the size of the cave.
Basically you go to swim in a cave pool for 90min. The water is super refreshing, there are some fish and crabs, and it's all in all really beautiful.
A super relaxing experience - highly recommend.

Is nice to look at - A very beautiful cave with crystal clear water and wonderful rocks.
Theoretically you can swim in the water, and they offer that, but in such countries you should avoid any freshwater for swimming, as there are often worms etc. in it (even if you can't see them)
