The Heraklion Archaeological Museum ranks among the largest and most significant museums in Greece, and is one of the foremost museums in Europe. It showcases representative artifacts from all periods of Cretan prehistory and history, spanning over 5,500 years from the Neolithic era to Roman times. The exceptionally important Minoan collection features unique examples of Minoan art, many of which are true masterpieces. The Heraklion Museum is justly regarded as the premier museum of Minoan culture worldwide. Situated in the town center, the museum was constructed between 1937 and 1940 by architect Patroklos Karantinos on the site of the former Roman Catholic monastery of Saint Francis, which was destroyed by an earthquake in 1856.
