- Fort Kochi - Upon arrival, a representative from Globes Travel and a private guide will warmly welcome guests at the pier and escort them to Old Cochin for the Cochin Heritage tour. The tour includes a visit to the Dutch Palace (closed on Fridays), originally built by the Portuguese and gifted to the Raja of Cochin in 1555. Although constructed by the Portuguese, it is commonly referred to as the ‘Dutch Palace’ due to renovations made by the Dutch during their brief rule. The palace is renowned for its murals, which follow the traditions of Hindu Temple Art. The tour continues with a visit to the Jewish synagogue (closed on Friday afternoons and Saturdays), established in 1568 A.D. It houses The Great Scrolls of the Old Testament and several copper plates inscribed with Hebrew Script, which are still preserved there. The Dutch cemetery, built in 1724, is one of the oldest cemeteries in India. The Indo-Portuguese museum, located in the garden of the Bishop’s house, offers insights into Portuguese culture and India’s first Catholic community. The next stop is St Francis Church, constructed by the Portuguese in 1510 A.D, and believed to be the oldest European Church in India. Vasco-da-Gama was initially buried here, and his remains were later moved to Portugal after fourteen years. The Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica, built by the Portuguese in 1505, is one of the two churches the Dutch chose not to demolish. The current structure was renovated by the British in 1887. Guests will also have the chance to see the Chinese fishing nets at the harbor entrance and observe the traditional fishing methods used by local fishermen in Fort Kochi. At the conclusion of the tour, guests will be returned to the port.
