- Chinese Fishing Nets - Known locally as Cheena vala, these stationary lift nets are a distinctive feature in India. These nets are fixed land installations used for fishing. While commonly referred to as Chinese fishing nets in India, their formal name is shore-operated lift nets. These large mechanical structures extend horizontal nets over 20 meters wide. Each setup is at least 10 meters tall, featuring a cantilever with a net suspended over the sea and large stones as counterweights, operated by a team of up to six fishermen. Although prevalent in coastal southern China and Indochina, in India, they are primarily found in Kochi and Kollam, where they have become a tourist attraction. This fishing method is rare in India and almost unique to the area, introduced by Chinese explorers in the 14th century. One interpretation of the city name Kochi is ‘co-chin’, meaning like China.
