While commonly referred to as Chinese fishing nets in India, the formal term is shore-operated lift nets. These impressive structures extend horizontal nets over 20 meters wide, supported by mechanical contraptions. Each setup stands at least 10 meters tall, featuring a cantilever with a net suspended over the water and large stones as counterweights, operated by a team of up to six fishermen. Although prevalent in coastal southern China and Indochina, in India, they are primarily found in Kochi and Kollam, where they attract tourists. This fishing method is rare in India and almost exclusive to this region, introduced by Chinese explorers in the 14th century. One interpretation of the name Kochi is ‘co-chin,’ meaning like China.

The laundry, initiated by the Vannar community from Tamil Nadu during the Dutch era, still employs traditional methods of hand-washing, open-air drying, and ironing. Approximately 45 washermen work at the laundry. The Vannar Sangham’s latest initiative aims to attract young community members to this traditional occupation, ensuring its continuity.

• Cochin Thirumala Devaswom Temple - Cochin Tirumala Devaswom, also known as Gosripuram, is the largest and most significant socio-religious institution for the Gowda Saraswat Brahmins of Kerala, India. Located in Cherlai, at the heart of Mattancherry town in the Cochin area, it is one of the earliest GSB settlements in Kerala. The temple was established in the latter half of the 16th century, and the history of GSBs in Kerala is closely linked with this temple and its Venkateswara idol.
