Originally built by the Portuguese in 1510, it was the first European church constructed in India. The renowned explorer Vasco Da Gama was initially buried here before his remains were moved to Portugal.
• Paradesi Synagogue - Situated in a tranquil part of Jew Town, the Paradesi Synagogue is over a century old and houses numerous rare antiques. Built in 1568, nearly 1500 years after Jews first established ties with Kerala, the synagogue was constructed on land donated by the former Cochin ruler, adjacent to Mattancherry Palace. It is the oldest synagogue in the Commonwealth, built by the Jewish community of Cochin. In various Indian languages, “Paradesi” means foreigner, referring to White Jews, a mixed group from Europe, the Middle East, and Kodungalloor.
