Archaeologists believe this site was continuously inhabited from at least the 2nd century BC to the 10th century AD.
St. Thomas is said to have arrived at Kodungalloor port (formerly Muziris) in 52 AD. The St. Thomas Church, founded by the apostle, contains holy relics from ancient times. It was here in Kodungalloor that he established the first Christian church in India.
- Paliam Nalukettu - Stroll through the Paravur Spice Market, where you can still imagine fresh produce being unloaded from ‘Vanchis’, traditional Kerala boats still in use today. The market supports the local community while preserving the historic buildings within it.
Continue your walk to the Paravur Jewish Synagogue. Synagogues are places of worship for Jewish communities, who settled around Muziris during various periods and engaged in trade. This synagogue, built in 1615, is one of the largest surviving synagogues in Kerala.
- Paliam Dutch Palace - Visit the Chendamangalam handloom weaving factory, operated by a women’s society, which is a primary source of income for local women. (Closed on Sundays and National Holidays) Chendamangalam fabrics are renowned for their superior quality, representing the entire Kerala handloom industry. Chendamangalam saris remain popular today.
- Chendamangalam Jewish Synagogue - In 1420, Jews from Kodungallur or Palayur established a synagogue in Chennoth (Chendamangalam), serving as a place of worship for Malabari Jews. Enjoy a brief visit to this ancient synagogue before stopping for a local lunch.

After lunch, continue to the Sree Venugopala Krishna Swamy Temple in Chendamangalam, a renowned Hindu temple among locals.

Arrive at Kottapuram Fort, built by the Portuguese in 1523, also known as Cranganore Fort, now referred to as Kodungallur Fort. The fort’s strategic location at the mouth of the Periyar River, before it meets the Arabian Sea, allowed control over ships and boats traveling to and from the Malabar interior. Enjoy the view of Chinese fishing nets in the backwaters of the Periyar River.
Visit the Cheraman Juma Masjid, the first mosque in India and possibly one of the oldest shrines in the world, where an oil lamp believed to be over 1,000 years old still burns. The mosque is thought to have been established in 629 AD.
