Bundala National Park - Situated in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka, Bundala National Park is part of a vast network of national parks and sanctuaries along the Southern - Southeastern coast. It was established as a wildlife sanctuary in 1969 and became a national park in 1993. Later, it was recognized as the first of four Ramsar Wetlands in Sri Lanka and declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2005.
Bundala’s compact area of just over 3,500 hectares is rich with five brackish water lagoons, salt flats, marshlands, shrubby thorn forests, mangrove forests, and other habitat types. Particularly between May and July, these habitats serve as nesting and breeding grounds for thousands of migratory birds.
