Extraordinary Koyasan - What a meaningful and beautiful day time we spent in Koyasan. Miyuki took care of us even before the trip started, giving us helpful information about the weather, travel and what type of tickets to get, and she carefully guided us till the very end. As soon as we met on the train going up, she started to explain about the historical significance of Koyasan and its surroundings. Her thoughtful and well-curated trip was peaceful, meaningful and gave us the wish to come back and spend more time here.

Wonderful time with a local. - Our guide, Hira, was a super nice man. We got to see so many beautiful places that we would otherwise have missed on our own. He got to the meeting location early and waited patiently for our arrival. He also arranged to make sure my husband was able to have a gluten-free lunch. He never rushed us along and waited for us to enjoy the site and to take many pictures. Although we had some communication barriers but we managed to understand each other. We loved Koyasan and had a wonderful time. We also really enjoyed meeting a local from the Wakayama prefecture.

Unforgettably beautiful day experienced - I booked this tour and extended it to 6 hours. My wishes passed on and Naka my guide has made it an unforgettable day. His knowledge and the many unsolicited extras made it fantastic. For example, I attended a fire ceremony as well.

Unforgettable tour of Koyasan with Hira San - It's taken me some time to submit this review, but I would be remiss if I did not return to TripAdvisor to write it. My daughter attends a boarding school in Japan. She, my sister and I visited Koyasan and stayed at the beautiful Fudoin monastery in October 2024. Our soft-spoken tour guide, Hira San, was just about the sweetest human being on the planet. He made our time at Koyasan absolutely unforgettable. The sights were stunning, and the beauty of the temples ethereal. But most importantly, Hira San's overwhelmingly thoughtful, kind, patient and caring demeanor embodied the spiritual nature of the surroundings. Even before we arrived, he communicated with us by email to ensure he clearly and thoroughly understood our needs. He then meticulously planned every moment of our trip to ensure we experienced this UNESCO World Heritage treasure in the best possible manner. Every detail of our time with him stands out, and not just because of the brilliant tour itself. He went above and beyond every step of the way, treating us like his own family; from providing his own umbrella to keep us dry while he got drenched in the rain, to running down a mountainside with my daughter to find her a restroom in a remote area, to scouting the perfect lunch restaurant with vegan options for me, to coming inside the train station at the end of the tour and waiting there to ensure we were taken care of until the moment we left. He even insisted on giving me his beautiful hand-held fan, which I had complimented earlier, as a memento. I have no words to describe how grateful and happy we were to have had the good fortune to meet such a warm, generous, inspiring human being. Hira San, if you're reading this, it was our great honor to spend time with and learn from you. And we all look forward to returning to Koyasan again someday to hopefully see more of it with you. Arigato Gozaimashta.

Amazing experience! - Naka-san is an amazing guide, who goes above and beyond for his customers. He was extremely informative, and tailored the tour to what he could see us enjoying. He also helped us with recommendations relevant to us for Koyasan after our tour. We will definitely be coming back at some time and hopefully we will have the chance to have him guide us again!

Yuki was our guide for... - Yuki was our guide for this tour. Although we had originally purchased the Mt Koya tour, both Yuki and JPA did not think that was feasible due to our arrival by cruise ship. We changed our tour to Wakayama city and castle. Unfortunately we weren’t able to do much of the castle part because of uneven surfaces. We decided to do a tea service in the gardens instead. We asked to go to a ramen restaurant for lunch and she found a lovely place. There really isn’t much to see in Wakayama other than the castle and honestly you could easily do it on your own. We ended the trip a bit early because there really wasn’t much to see or do.

An enormous waste of money! - As advised, I selected 3 sites to see on the tour. I was taken to 2 sites and when asked when would i see the 3rd site, I was told by the guide that we had passed it and was too far to go back to see it. The guide was very polite, however, they didn't appear to know too much about the sites we visited. They were unable to answer most of my questions. Unfortunately it was quite a challenge on my part to understand the information proved by the guide. Their English was not not of a suitable standard to confidently explain the various details of the sites, or answer my questions. In addition to the above, after the guide told me we weren't going to the 3rd selected site, we took the bus back into Koyasan and he left. I paid for a 4 your walking tour with a government approved guide. What I got was a 3 hour walk with a guide who was hard to understand and was not knowledgeable of the area. I had to spend on Google for the answers to most of my questions. I only paid for a tour to get alot more insight and history of the area. I should have saved my money and did it alone with Google. It is my expectation that I will be refunded 25% of the cost of the tour as I did not see one of the selected sites, and that the tour guide just left after 3 hours. Never again!
