Beautiful Spot, Poor Experience with the Kiteschool - FX Bonaire Kiteschool is located in an absolutely stunning spot — crystal-clear waters, steady winds, and very few kiters in the water make it feel like a private paradise. If you're looking for a peaceful and uncrowded place to kite, the location itself couldn't be better. Unfortunately, the experience at the kite station left a lot to be desired. Organization is practically non-existent. The rental process was chaotic, with no clear overview of which equipment was available. Despite having scheduled a rental for 1 PM, the gear was still not ready by 3 PM. On another day, the school closed early without notice, cutting my paid 4-hour rental down to just 2 hours (at least I could use those 2 hours for the next day without charge). The quality and availability of rental gear were also shockingly poor. There was only one 12m² kite available for the entire station, making it impossible to get the right equipment when multiple students were on the water. On one occasion when I was told no suitable kite was available, I witnessed one of the instructors head out for his own private session with an 11m² kite — the clear priority was not on the paying customers. On another occasion, I was handed a visibly broken board. When I refused to use it, I was met with a flippant “you won’t even notice” — not exactly a professional or reassuring response. The teaching experience varied greatly. On the first days, my girlfriends instructor barely explained anything, couldn’t remember her progress from the day before, and treated her in a condescending and disrespectful way. It felt more like she was being tolerated than taught. On the last day, however, a different instructor took over — he was friendly, communicative, explained everything clearly, and treated her with genuine respect. The contrast was night and day, and it showed what the school could offer with the right people. Another unfortunate aspect was the fact that if you don’t speak Dutch, you may feel like an outsider. Communication was often minimal and unwelcoming unless you were part of the Dutch-speaking group. Lastly, there are no food options anywhere nearby, so come prepared — or you’ll be stuck hungry during long sessions on the beach. Conclusion: While the location is truly idyllic, the poor organization, lack of decent equipment, inconsistent instruction quality, and unprofessional behavior made this a frustrating experience overall. With better management and a consistent standard of instruction, this place has great potential. For now, however, I cannot recommend it — unless you're lucky enough to get one of the few good instructors and bring all your own gear.
