landhuis Karpata - From the 17th century until 1863, Bonaire, like many Caribbean islands, relied on slave labor for plantations and salt pans. Throughout the island, remnants of this time remind us of the hard work and hands that built the island’s economy during this dark period. At Karpata, you will see a building where women and children stayed during the week while men worked on the south side of the island—a 7-hour walk they sometimes undertook daily if unable to stay in the south.

In the distance, you’ll see Brandaris, the tallest point on Bonaire, located in the Washington Nature Preserve Park.
