Setting Sail on a Budget

As a digital nomad, I’m always on the lookout for budget-friendly adventures that offer a taste of local culture and stunning scenery. When I heard about the James Bond Island Tour in Phang Nga Bay, I knew it was a must-do. The promise of exploring limestone caves, visiting a floating village, and seeing the iconic James Bond Island was too tempting to resist.

The day began with an early morning pickup from my hostel near Karon Beach. I joined a small group of fellow travelers, all eager to embark on this adventure. The drive to our first stop was long, nearly two hours, but the anticipation kept us all in high spirits. We made a quick restroom stop along the way, which was a welcome break.

Our first destination was the Suwan Khuha Temple, also known as the Monkey Cave. The temple is nestled inside a limestone cavern, and the sight of the reclining golden Buddha was awe-inspiring. A word of advice: dress modestly, as shoulders must be covered, and shorts should reach the knees. If you’re not prepared, don’t worry—they provide ponchos to cover up. The terrain is uneven, so sturdy shoes are a must.

Floating Villages and Island Wonders

After soaking in the spiritual ambiance of the temple, we headed to Koh Panyee, a floating Muslim village. This unique community is built entirely on stilts above the sea, and wandering through its narrow alleys felt like stepping back in time. The locals were incredibly welcoming, and the buffet lunch offered was both delicious and filling. Just a heads up, sodas are extra, so budget accordingly.

The highlight of the tour was undoubtedly James Bond Island. Known locally as Koh Tapu, this striking limestone pinnacle is a sight to behold. While the area can get crowded, the unique geology and stunning views make it worth the visit. There are small shopping booths for those interested in souvenirs, and if you’re feeling adventurous, you can climb up into the rock formations for a better view.

Kayaking Through Hidden Caves

Our final stop was an optional kayaking adventure. For a small fee, a local paddler took us through hidden caves and lagoons, offering a different perspective of Phang Nga Bay’s natural beauty. The experience was serene and provided a perfect end to a long day of exploration.

Throughout the tour, our guide, aptly named Happy, was fantastic. His enthusiasm and knowledge added to the experience, making the long day enjoyable and informative.
