Angkor Wat - Explore the Major Temples of Angkor in a Day.
Visiting all the temples in the Angkor Complex in a single day is not feasible, as the Angkor Archaeological Park boasts over 70 ruins. However, the focus will be on experiencing the Major Temples, starting with the iconic Angkor Wat Temple. - Ta Prohm Temple - Renowned for its appearance in the film Tomb Raider.
Ta Prohm, known in modern times as prasat ta prohm, is a temple located in Angkor, Siem Reap Province, Cambodia. Constructed in the Bayon style during the late 12th and early 13th centuries, it was originally named Rajavihara. Situated about one kilometre east of Angkor Thom and on the southern edge of the East Baray, it was established by the Khmer King Jayavarman VII as a Mahayana Buddhist monastery and university. Unlike most Angkorian temples, Ta Prohm remains largely in the condition it was found, with its picturesque and atmospheric blend of trees growing amidst the ruins and jungle surroundings, making it a favorite among visitors. UNESCO added Ta Prohm to the World Heritage List in 1992.
- Ta Nei Temple - A hidden gem within this archaeological park.
- Bayon Temple - The Bayon is a lavishly adorned Khmer temple at Angkor in Cambodia. Constructed in the late 12th or early 13th century as the state temple of the Mahayana Buddhist King Jayavarman VII, the Bayon is located at the heart of Jayavarman’s capital, Angkor Thom. After Jayavarman’s passing, it was modified and expanded by subsequent Hindu and Theravada Buddhist kings to reflect their religious beliefs.
The Bayon’s most notable feature is the array of serene and smiling stone faces on the numerous towers that rise from the upper terrace and cluster around its central peak. The temple features two sets of bas-reliefs, depicting a mix of mythological, historical, and everyday scenes. The main conservation body, the Japanese Government Team for the Safeguarding of Angkor (JSA), has described the temple as “the most striking expression of the baroque style” of Khmer architecture, contrasting with the classical style of Angkor Wat.
- Pre Rup - Pre Rup was dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva and is likely situated on a former Shiva ashram, constructed by Yasovarman I in the previous century. It may have been at the center of a new capital city built by Rajendravarman, with the southern dike of East Baray as the northern city limit, but no dwellings have survived. This “eastern city hypothesis” by Philippe Stern has not been confirmed by archaeological findings.
