- Angkor Wat - Angkor Wat is Cambodia’s most renowned structure, even featured on the national flag. This temple symbolizes the artistic and spiritual peak of the Khmer Empire and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992. Each year, millions of visitors from around the globe come to Angkor Wat, making it a highlight of any trip to Southeast Asia. Visitors are drawn to its impressive architecture and intricate reliefs that depict the historical and spiritual life of the Khmer.
- Angkor Thom South Gate - Entering through the South Gate of Angkor Thom immerses you in the captivating historical world of the Khmer. The harmonious blend of architecture, symbolism, and nature makes this site an unforgettable introduction to the Angkor complex.
Above the gate, you will see four large, serene faces, similar to those at the Bayon Temple. They gaze in all directions, symbolizing protection, vigilance, and the power of the former empire.
In front of the gate, an impressive bridge spans a moat. On either side, you will find long rows of figures: on one side stand the gods, known as Devas, and on the other, the demons, the Asuras. Together, they hold a giant serpent, representing the famous “Churning of the Ocean of Milk” legend – an important symbol in Hindu mythology.
- Bayon Temple - The Bayon Temple is one of the most famous temples in Angkor. It is located in the center of Angkor Thom, the capital city. Angkor Thom was the last city of the powerful Khmer Empire. The temple dates back to the 12th to 13th centuries. It is renowned for its face towers and intricate reliefs. The reliefs depict historical events, battles, and daily life. The Bayon symbolizes royal power and religious significance simultaneously. It is considered a masterpiece of classical Khmer architecture. The reliefs are narrative and provide historical insights into the Khmer. The temple uniquely combines art, religion, and political symbolism.
- Ta Prohm - The Ta Prohm Temple is one of the most famous temples in the Angkor Archaeological Park in Siem Reap, Cambodia. It is renowned for its overgrown jungle character, where massive roots of kapok and fig trees entwine walls, towers, and galleries. The temple was built in the late 12th to early 13th centuries under King Jayavarman VII and was originally Buddhist.
Ta Prohm is located in the eastern part of Angkor Thom, near other famous temples like Bayon and Angkor Wat. The architecture includes several interconnected buildings and courtyards. Many structures are partially ruined, giving the temple a romantically decayed atmosphere. Originally, it served as a monastery and university for Buddhist monks. The fusion of art, religion, and nature makes Ta Prohm unique and an unforgettable experience in the Angkor Park.
- Baphuon Temple - The Baphuon Temple is an impressive temple in the center of Angkor Thom in Cambodia.
It was built in the 11th century under King Udayadityavarman II and was originally a Hindu temple dedicated to the god Shiva. Later, it was transformed into a Buddhist sanctuary.
The Baphuon is known for its pyramid-like structure, symbolizing the sacred Mount Meru. Particularly striking is the large reclining Buddha image on the back of the temple, which was added later.
After many years of decay, the temple was meticulously restored and is now considered one of Angkor’s architectural masterpieces.
- Terrace of the Elephants - The Terrace of the Elephants is an impressive platform in the heart of Angkor Thom.
It once served as a royal viewing stand from which the king observed ceremonies and parades. The intricate elephant reliefs, which give the terrace its name, are particularly beautiful.
A walk along the terrace allows you to experience the history and unique atmosphere of Angkor up close and in a very impressive way.
- Terrace of the Leper King - The Terrace of the Leper King is a mysterious and intricately decorated platform in Angkor Thom.
It was built in the 12th century under King Jayavarman VII and is known for its detailed reliefs featuring gods, demons, and mythological figures.
The name comes from a statue once thought to represent a “Leper King.” A visit here allows you to delve deeply into the history and symbolism of the Khmer.
- Angkor Archaeological Park - Phnom Bakheng is situated on a hill and offers a stunning 360° view over the jungle of Angkor. From the top, you can even spot the famous Angkor Wat temple in the distance. As the sun sets, it bathes the sky in warm colors like orange, red, and violet – an unforgettable and particularly atmospheric moment.
