- Angkor Wat - Angkor Wat is a temple complex located in Angkor, Cambodia, constructed for King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century as his state temple and capital city. It is the best-preserved temple at the site and has remained a significant religious center since its inception, initially Hindu, dedicated to Vishnu, and later Buddhist. It is the largest religious building in the world. The temple exemplifies the pinnacle of Khmer architectural style, designed to symbolize Mount Meru, the abode of the devas in Hindu mythology. Enclosed by a moat and an outer wall 3.6 kilometers (2.2 mi) long, it features three rectangular galleries, each elevated above the previous. At the temple’s center stands a quincunx of towers. Unlike most Angkorian temples, Angkor Wat faces west; scholars debate the meaning of this orientation. The temple is celebrated for its architectural grandeur and harmony, extensive bas-reliefs, and numerous guardian spirits adorning its walls.
- Angkor Thom - Angkor Thom, the capital city of the Khmer empire, was constructed at the end of the 12th century. Located north of Angkor Wat, between West Baray and East Baray, near Angkor Wat, Preah Khan, and Phnom Bakheng, Angkor Thom is an almost square city encircled by 8-meter-high walls stretching over 12 kilometers, with five impressive gopura gates providing access. The city’s name means “large city” or “great city.” King Jayavarman VII established Angkor Thom as the new capital of the Khmer Kingdom after expelling the Chams, who had destroyed the former capital, Yasodharapura. He fortified the city with a high wall, further enclosed by a 100-meter-wide moat.
- Bayon Temple - Continuing the tour, the journey leads to the majestic South Gate of Angkor Thom. Within its vast expanse lies the renowned Bayon and Baphuon temples, featuring a magnificent array of 54 towers adorned with 216 serene faces of the divine Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara. Throughout the visit, a knowledgeable tour guide will share the rich historical tapestry of the Angkor Temples and the illustrious Khmer empire, expertly highlighting the intricate architectural masterpieces that grace the Angkor landscape. Following this, lunch will be provided, and the vehicle will pass by both the Terrace of Elephants and the Terrace of the Leper King, known as the royal viewing platform and the stage of the king’s great audience hall.
- Terrace of the Elephants - The Terrace of the Elephants is one of the iconic constructions of the Khmer Empire and a key highlight within the walled city of Angkor Thom. The long terrace, also referred to in some records as the Terrace of Honor, fronts the Royal Palace and has an entrance that once connected to a causeway leading to the Victory Gate of Angkor Thom, which in turn led to the terrace of the East Baray. The terrace is approximately 340 meters in length along a north-south axis, with the Leper King Terrace to its north and the terrace/entrance gopura of Baphuon Temple to its south. Along its length, the front wall is adorned with near life-size carvings of elephants alternating with sections of garuda and standing lions.
