Enter the magnificent temple in the dark from the less-frequented eastern side, and quietly walk through ancient cloistered corridors past the world’s longest stretch of bas-relief carvings.
- Angkor Thom South Gate - The south gate of Angkor Thom is the most well-preserved. It is accessed from the outside via a causeway that spans approximately fifty meters across a moat. On either side of the causeway are railings adorned with 54 stone figures depicting a famous Hindu story: the myth of the Churning of the Ocean. On the left side of the moat, 54 ‘devas’ (guardian gods) pull the head of the serpent ‘Shesha’, while on the right side, 54 ‘asuras’ (demon gods) pull the serpent’s tail in the opposite direction. In this myth, the serpent’s body is coiled around the central mountain—Mt. Meru—possibly represented here by the Bayon temple at the site’s center. The myth narrates that as the Devas pulled the serpent one way and the gods pushed the other, the ocean began to churn, precipitating the elements. By alternating back and forth, the ocean was ‘milked’, creating the earth and the cosmos anew.
- Bayon Temple - Angkor Thom is the majestic site that once served as the Khmer Empire’s splendid capital city. Take a moment to admire its grandeur before exploring the city. Upon reaching the Bayon temple, marvel at its intricately crafted central towers adorned with over 200 massive faces.
- Terrace of the Elephants - The 350-meter-long Terrace of Elephants was used as a grand reviewing stand for public ceremonies and served as the foundation for the king’s grand audience hall. It features five outworks extending towards the Central Square—three in the center and one at each end. The middle section of the retaining wall is embellished with life-size garuda and lions; towards either end are the two sections of the renowned parade of elephants, complete with their Khmer mahouts.
- Ta Prohm Temple - One of the most atmospheric temples in Angkor. Once home to 2,740 monks, Ta Prohm today appears much as it did in the early 1850s when French explorer Henri Mouhot ‘rediscovered’ this decaying site. After navigating the maze-like interior of Ta Prohm, return to the hotel after a long yet rewarding day, leaving with a lifetime of memories of one of the world’s wonders.
