- Angkor Wat - An early start is essential to secure a spot at the reflection pools of Angkor Wat. The area is particularly crowded at sunrise, especially around the two reflection pools in front of the temple. It is truly a magnificent experience.
- Angkor Thom South Gate - The south gate of Angkor Thom is a favorite among visitors, as it has been fully restored with many of the original heads still intact. This gate is located on the main road leading into Angkor Thom from Angkor Wat.
- Bayon Temple - Constructed nearly a century after Angkor Wat, the Bayon Temple’s initial structure and earliest sections remain unknown. Situated at the center of a royal city, it likely began as a temple-mountain symbolizing Mount Meru. The temple was expanded during its second construction phase, with the current Bayon belonging to the third and final art style phase. The Bayon’s grand architecture, with over 200 large faces carved on 54 towers, exudes majesty. These faces, with their slightly curved lips and shadowed eyes, are believed to represent the bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, symbolizing the king’s omnipresence. The features of these faces, including a broad forehead and slightly upturned lips, reflect the famous Smile of Angkor.
- Angkor Thom - Angkor Thom is a remarkable expression of genius, embodying Buddhist cosmology on a grand scale that only great artists would dare to depict.
- Baphuon Temple - Baphuon Temple stands on a rectangular sandstone base with five levels of similar size, unlike the typical successively smaller levels. The first three levels are surrounded by sandstone galleries, and Baphuon is the first structure to feature stone galleries with a central tower. Two cross-shaped libraries with four porches are located in the courtyard, originally connected by an elevated walkway supported by columns.
- Phimeanakas - Located near the center of the Royal Palace’s enclosed area, Phimeanakas Temple was once topped with a golden pinnacle, described by Zhou Daguan as the Tower of Gold. Built from roughly hewn sandstone blocks, the temple features minimal decoration.
- Terrace of the Elephants - The elephants, ridden by servants and princes, move quietly as if on a leisurely stroll. Their steps are even and unimpeded by obstacles. The forest they traverse is impenetrable to all but the smallest creatures, which can slip through the undergrowth, and the largest animals, which create paths through the virgin vegetation.
- Terrace of the Leper King - The Terrace of the Leper King continues the grandeur of Jayavarman VII’s reign, featuring dramatic bas-reliefs on both the interior and exterior. During clearing, the EFEO discovered a second wall with similar bas-reliefs, believed by some archaeologists to indicate a later rite. This second wall, built from laterite and sandstone, was constructed in front of the collapsed original without clearing the rubble. The EFEO has recently created a false corridor to allow visitors to view the reliefs on the first wall.
- Ta Nei Temple - Ta Nei is a late 12th-century stone temple in Angkor, Cambodia, built during King Jayavarman VII’s reign. It is located near the northwest corner of the East Baray, a large sacred reservoir, and was dedicated to the Buddha.
- Ta Prohm Temple - Ta Prohm is the undisputed capital of the kingdom of the Trees. It remains largely untouched by archaeologists, aside from clearing paths for visitors and structural reinforcement to prevent further decay. Its natural state allows visitors to experience the wonder felt by early explorers in the mid-19th century. Enveloped in dense jungle, Ta Prohm exudes a romantic aura, with fig, banyan, and kapok trees spreading their roots over stones and intertwining branches forming a canopy over the structures. The temple’s haunting charm is as inescapable as the roots entwined around its walls and towers.
- Banteay Kdei - Banteay Kdei gained fame in 2001 with the discovery of a cache containing broken Buddha statues and other Buddhist artifacts (274 pieces). The temple, built at ground level, served as a Buddhist monastery. The original design elements of Banteay Kdei appear to have included a Central Sanctuary.
