- Angkor Wat - Angkor Wat is a magnificent temple complex located in Angkor, Cambodia, constructed for King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century as his state temple and capital city. It is the best-preserved temple at the site and has remained a significant religious center since its inception, initially Hindu, dedicated to Vishnu, and later Buddhist. It is the largest religious structure in the world. The temple exemplifies the pinnacle of classical Khmer architecture, designed to symbolize Mount Meru, the mythical home of the devas in Hindu mythology. Enclosed by a moat and an outer wall 3.6 kilometers (2.2 mi) long, the temple features three rectangular galleries, each elevated above the previous. At its center stands a quincunx of towers. Unlike most Angkorian temples, Angkor Wat faces west; scholars debate the meaning of this orientation. The temple is celebrated for its architectural grandeur and harmony, extensive bas-reliefs, and numerous guardian spirits adorning its walls.
- Angkor Thom South Gate - Next, proceed with your guide to the fortified city of Angkor Thom, which spans an impressive 6 square miles (10 km sq). Enter through the monumental South Gate via a scenic causeway flanked by statues of demons and gods, each holding a giant naga, a deity in the form of a snake.
- Bayon Temple - The Bayon is a richly adorned Khmer temple at Angkor, constructed in the late 12th or early 13th century as the state temple of the Mahayana Buddhist King Jayavarman VII. It is located at the heart of Jayavarman’s capital, Angkor Thom. A unique feature of the Bayon is the lack of an enclosing wall, though it is protected by the wall surrounding Angkor Thom. The Bayon’s basic layout consists of three levels (1-3). The first and second levels are square galleries with bas-reliefs, while a circular Central Sanctuary dominates the third level. Despite its seemingly straightforward design, the Bayon’s layout is intricate, with a labyrinth of galleries, passages, and steps that make the levels almost indistinguishable, creating dim lighting, narrow walkways, and low ceilings. The temple is adorned with over 200 smiling faces on its towers.
- Kompong Phluk - After a lunch break at your own expense, a 45-minute drive will take you to the countryside. Upon arrival at the quay, board a local boat for a 1.5-hour journey to Tonle Sap Lake. En route to the lake, pass through Kompong Phluk, a floating village and village on stilts, meaning ‘harbor of the tusks’. Witness firsthand how villagers live in this unique and extraordinary environment. Observe colorful houses, schools, temples, a church, and local government offices. Marvel at the sight of the lush flooded forest (during the rainy season) of the surrounding floodplain. The boat ride will continue past the village until reaching the vast waterscape of Tonle Sap Lake. Learn from your knowledgeable guide about Cambodia’s vital source of life-giving resources. Optional (rainy season only): enjoy a magical canoe ride into the dense mangrove forest. Simply inform your guide if you wish to take this short tour at an additional cost.
