WAT THMEY, known as Siem Reap’s Killing Field, is one of many killing fields in Cambodia during the tragic Khmer Rouge/Pol Pot regime from 1975-1979. The Khmer Rouge forced city dwellers to flee to the countryside to perform manual labour in the fields and was responsible for mass killings trying to establish a classless society. The effects of this bloody time are still being overcome by those that were lucky enough to survive. WAT THMEY in 1995 was renovated, a substantial amount of bones and skulls of the victims were placed in the memorial stupa. This place is the most convenient to visit if you don’t have time to visit Phnom Penh’s killing fields and S21 prison, the largest memorial for the brave population that perished.

Unique features of a Khmer cooking class typically involve learning in a cozy, small-group environment, often within a local’s home, offering a hands-on experience that begins with a market tour to choose fresh ingredients.
Key distinctive elements:
- Authentic setting: Many classes provide a personal and intimate experience by taking place in a local family’s home, rather than a large restaurant kitchen.
- Hands-on market tour: Participants visit a local market with their instructor to learn about and select fresh ingredients for their meal, offering a comprehensive cultural experience from start to finish.
- Personalized instruction: With small class sizes, often limited to six participants, there is personalized, hands-on support and guidance from the instructor.
- Cultural immersion: The experience offers insight into Khmer culture through its cuisine, focusing on aromatic spices, herbs, and other traditional ingredients.
