• Koh Ker Temple - Koh Ker served as the capital of the Khmer Empire for a brief period from 928-941 C.E. under King Jayavarman IV. The only authentic, contemporary information about Angkor’s political ideology comes from the Koh Ker inscription, which marks a shift from the focus on the ‘rāja’ or king, to ‘rājya’ or the kingdom and its people. During Jayavarman IV’s reign, no wars were waged, making it the most peaceful era of the Khmer Empire, allowing for a cultural resurgence. This peace enabled Jayavarman IV to undertake projects in regional, social, economic, and architectural development, town planning, and rural infrastructure, as evidenced by the monuments at Koh Ker.
• Prasat Pram - This small temple is relatively well-preserved, featuring three remaining sanctuary towers and two libraries. Although the enclosure walls are intact, the temple’s east gopura is missing, except for its foundation stones. The exact construction date is unknown as the temple was never fully completed, with unfinished lintels above all five doorways.
• Beng Mealea - Beng Mealea is one of the most evocative Angkor temples near Siem Reap. The central tower lies in ruins, with vines and roots gradually enveloping walls adorned with ancient Khmer art. Through the dappled light of large trees growing through the ruins, impressive carvings hint at the significance of this once-great temple.
