Phnom Kulen holds great symbolic significance for Cambodia as the birthplace of the ancient Khmer Empire. It was here that King Jayavarman II declared independence from Java in 802 CE. He initiated the Devaraja cult of the king, a linga cult, around 804 CE, asserting independence from Java, to which the Khmer had been a vassal state. There is debate over whether “Java” refers to Java, Champa (known as chvea by the Khmer), or “Lava” (a Lao kingdom), as well as the legend of his earlier captivity in Java. For more on this debate, refer to Higham’s The Civilization of Angkor. During the Angkorian era, the area was known as Mahendraparvata.
- Banteay Srei - After exploring Phnom Kulen, the tour continues to the exquisite temple of Banteay Srei.
Consecrated on April 22, 967 A.D., Banteay Srei is unique as the only major temple at Angkor not built by a monarch. Its construction is attributed to courtiers Vishnukumara and Yajnavaraha, who served as a counselor to King Rajendravarman II. According to the foundational stela, Yajnavaraha, the grandson of King Harsavarman I, was a scholar and philanthropist who aided those suffering from illness, injustice, or poverty. His pupil was the future King Jayavarman V. Originally, the temple was surrounded by a town called Īśvarapura.
Banteay Srei is renowned for the intricacy of its carvings, including a depiction of Kala, a mythical creature symbolizing time and the god Siva. Yajnavaraha’s temple was primarily dedicated to the Hindu god Śiva.
After completing the temple tour, guests will be dropped off either at their hotel or another location in Siem Reap city.
