- Meryemana (The Virgin Mary’s House) - Meryemana (The Virgin Mary’s House)
The House of the Virgin Mary is located on the Aladag Mountains, 5 miles from Ephesus. During the third Ecumenical Council in 431 AD in Ephesus, it was claimed that Mary arrived in Ephesus with St. John in 37 A.D. and lived there until her passing in 48 A.D. Following the house’s discovery, the Archbishop of Kusadasi declared it a pilgrimage site in 1892. On July 26, 1967, Pope Paul VI visited and prayed there.
- The Temple of Artemis - The Story of the Temple of Artemis
The Temple of Artemis is a rare and magnificent structure dedicated to the Goddess Artemis. Like many iconic works, it has its own story. Artemis, known as the moon goddess and Apollo’s sister, is depicted in ancient Greek polytheistic beliefs as a figure with extraordinary powers. In mythology, Artemis is also described as a virgin Greek goddess. Unlike Greek goddesses, she is depicted as figures in Egyptian civilizations. Artemis was featured on coins minted at the time. The Temple of Artemis was designed by the Greek Architect Chershpron under the order of the Lydian King Croesus and was a gift to Artemis.
