The temple was destroyed on July 21, 356 BC, in an act of arson by Herostratus. According to legend, on that same night, Alexander the Great was born. A noble Ephesian remarked that Artemis was too busy with Alexander’s birth to save her burning temple. Alexander later offered to fund the Temple’s reconstruction, but the Ephesians declined. Eventually, the temple was rebuilt after Alexander’s death in 323 BC. This reconstruction was later destroyed during a raid by the Goths. It was rebuilt again, but after thousands of years, not much remains of the Artemision. A visit will allow you to imagine the temple’s former magnificence.
