- Meryemana (The Virgin Mary’s House) - Recognized as a holy site by the Vatican, the House of Virgin Mary welcomes both Muslims and Christians from around the globe who come to pray and make offerings as part of their pilgrimage. This sacred site for Christians worldwide also attracts believers of all faiths and tourists. The path leading to the Virgin Mary’s house is lined with olive trees planted by Lazarist monks in 1898. At the end of this path stands a statue of Mary, a gift from a religious community in Izmir, dated 1867. The visit concludes with three fountains, accessible by descending the stairs to the right after exiting the church. Visitors often drink the water from these fountains and wells, believing in its healing properties, and take some with them.
- Ancient City of Ephesus - The Ancient City of Ephesus is a treasure trove of symbols that illuminate the advanced urbanization, architecture, and religious history of the Hellenistic and Roman eras. It showcases significant architectural and urban planning examples from various periods. Entirely constructed of marble, the city is awe-inspiring with its architectural marvels. Ephesus is home to one of the world’s most magnificent excavations, featuring numerous historical artifacts such as The Odeon, The Fountain of Trajan, The Terraces of Apartment Houses, The Stream Baths of Scholastika, The Temple of Hadrian, and the impressive Celsus Library adorned with columns and statues. Not to be missed is The Magnificent Grand Theater, where Saint Paul preached, boasting a capacity of 24,000 seats, making it the largest theater of antiquity.
- The Temple of Artemis - The Temple of Artemis served as a religious site where the people of Ephesus worshipped the goddess and also functioned as a marketplace. Although only its foundational ruins and a marble column remain, it is a must-see in Selcuk. The temple, part of the Temenos religious section, resembled a small city with public buildings and residences. Situated away from the sea and surrounded by fertile land, it operated as a commercial hub and a bank due to its safety. The Temple of Artemis was once a magnificent structure, as described by Macedonian General Antipatros: “When I saw the house of Artemis built on clouds, all other wonders lost their shine and I said, ‘Here! Except for Olympus, the sun has never looked at such a big thing.’”
- Isa Bey Mosque - Constructed in 1374–75, the İsa Bey Mosque is one of the oldest and most remarkable examples of architectural art from the Anatolian beyliks. It is located on the outskirts of the Ayasluğ Hills in Selçuk.
- Cave of the Seven Sleepers - This article was previously published as part of the book “Around Ephesus and Kusadasi: TAN Travel Guide” by Izabela Miszczak. If visiting the Ephesus area, be sure to explore the ruins of the Grotto of the Seven Sleepers (tr. Yedi Uyuyanlar) nearby. This Byzantine necropolis features numerous rock-cut tombs and is linked to the legend of a group of youths who hid in a cave and awoke years later to a changed world.
