• The Basilica of Saint John - In the early A.D., Evangelist St. John resided in Ephesus to spread Christianity and gather followers. According to many sources, he died near Ephesus after returning from exile in Patmos and was buried on the southern slope of Ayosolug Hill by his disciples. Roman Emperor Justinian built one of Christianity’s largest Basilicas in the 4th Century A.D. over St. John’s burial site.
• The Temple of Artemis - Artemis, the Greek goddess, was the virginal huntress and twin of Apollo, who succeeded the Titan Selene as Goddess of the Moon.
  The ancient temple, dedicated to the cult of Artemis, was constructed around 650 BC on a site already sacred to the Anatolian Mother Goddess, Cybele. Financed by the wealthy king of Lydia, the marshy ground was chosen to prevent future earthquakes. Over time, it has been destroyed and rebuilt multiple times due to natural disasters.
